Arrest Linked to 2007 Nandigram Agitation
Mahi Shrivastava, Bhopal: Just hours after former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee declared her faction’s support for Congress candidate Milan Pradhan in the October 6 Nandigram Assembly bypoll, he was detained in West Bengal on Friday in relation to an old alleged murder case.
Pradhan’s detention is connected to a murder case that began during the anti-land-acquisition demonstrations in Nandigram in 2007. One of the pivotal activities of Mamata Banerjee’s political career was the protest against the land acquisition plans of the then-Left Front government. In 2011, the Left Front’s 34-year hegemony in West Bengal came to an end because to the Trinamool Congress’s efforts to broaden its base of support.
Mamata Announces Support for Congress Candidate
Banerjee’s announcement that her group will support the Congress candidate at a news conference at her Kalighat home before the arrest. Her choice came when Sanchita Pradhan Dey, who had been nominated for the bypoll by her side, withdrew. After allegedly seeing West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Dey withdrew her candidacy.
Banerjee stated that the decision was meant to strengthen the INDIA bloc and referred to the Congress as a “sister party.” “In Nandigram, my faction had previously chosen to back the Congress, and this is the start of a new era. “Let Bengal be the starting point for the message to strengthen the INDIA bloc,” she stated.
Arrest Timing Triggers Political Controversy
A political flame was instantly fueled by the timing of Pradhan’s arrest. Kunal Ghosh, a leader of the Trinamool, questioned the decision, asking why the candidate was taken into custody shortly after gaining Mamata Banerjee’s backing. He called the development “unbelievable” and questioned whether it was the result of fear or a lack of confidence.
Leaders of Congress said that the arrest was motivated by politics. Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said the arrest was an attempt to “hijack democracy” and accused the BJP-led government of interfering with the election by exploiting a 19-year-old case that had been dormant. Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Congress, claimed that the BJP was attempting to obstruct a fair election and described it as an act of “political revenge.”
Senior Congressman Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury emphasized that Mamata Banerjee’s endorsement had not been secured by the party. After her own candidate withdrew, he stated Banerjee was free to make the announcement.
A disagreement about the identity of the Trinamool Congress coincided with the Nandigram happenings. For the bypoll, the Election Commission banned the party’s customary name and symbol. The competing party led by Arup Roy was given the name “Democratic Trinamool Congress” and the envelope emblem, while Mamata Banerjee’s group was given the name “Mamata All India Trinamool Congress” and the Football Player symbol.
