Akansha Singh, Bhopal: Abhijeet Dipke gives Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar a deadline to step down, warning of a nationwide agitation from October 2.

Dipke challenges CEC Gyanesh Kumar over voter-roll issues

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), led by founder Abhijeet Dipke, has intensified its campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding his resignation over concerns surrounding the electoral process. During a press conference in New Delhi on September 24, the organisation reportedly issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Chief Election Commissioner.

Dipke said that if Kumar failed to resign within the announced deadline, CJP would launch a nationwide protest. The announcement has brought renewed attention to the organisation’s allegations concerning the Election Commission and electoral reforms.

Mumbai to Witness Protest on October 2

On September 25, Dipke announced that the proposed nationwide agitation would begin in Mumbai on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. He said the campaign would subsequently reach other cities across the country. The organisation has presented the proposed movement as an effort to raise public awareness about electoral rights and what it describes as threats to democracy. The announcement marks a shift from CJP’s earlier education-related protests towards a campaign focused on the Election Commission.

SIR at the Centre of the Dispute

The controversy is closely linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. CJP has alleged that the revision process could affect voters’ rights and has questioned the exclusion of names from electoral lists.Among its demands are a halt to the SIR exercise, restoration of the January 2025 electoral roll, and an independent investigation into the revision process. The organisation has also called for scrutiny of election-related records and changes to the law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners. These allegations and demands represent CJP’s position and should not be treated as independently established findings.

Wider Demands and Political Context

CJP has additionally called for action against the Chief Election Commissioner and raised objections to the conduct of upcoming elections. Dipke has also criticised opposition parties for participating in elections while alleging irregularities in the electoral system. The organisation’s latest announcement follows its earlier 37-day protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over education-related issues. With the proposed October 2 mobilisation, CJP is now seeking to bring electoral concerns into the centre of public debate.
