Rishita Gangrade

A massive cloudburst struck Chositi (also spelled Chashoti) in Kishtwar district on August 14, unleashing a devastating flash flood along the Machail Mata Yatra route. Early reports indicate at least 46–60 fatalities, over 100 injured, and more than 200 still missing. Rescue efforts by the Indian Army, NDRF, SDRF, police, and volunteers continue amid ongoing challenges.

A Rapid Catastrophe

On the afternoon of August 14, between approximately 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. IST, a sudden cloudburst hit Chositi village in Kishtwar—rocketing torrents of floodwater down narrow mountain valleys and sweeping away structures, pilgrims, and security posts. The event unfolded in just two minutes, leaving little time for escape. Survivors described it as feeling like “an explosion.”

The flood struck at a gathering point for the Machail Mata Yatra, a major pilgrimage. A community kitchen (“langar”) with about 200 pilgrims, along with a security post and vehicles, were washed away.

Human Toll and Ongoing Rescue

Casualty numbers vary:

  • Reuters reported 46 dead, with over 200 missing.
  • The Times of India cited the Chief Minister citing approximately 60 fatalities and more than 100 injured.
  • Indian Express confirmed 50 dead, over 100 injured, and 50 missing.
  • Daily Excelsior recounted harrowing rescues, including that of a 9-year-old girl, Devanshi, found alive under debris amid tragic scenes.

As of now, more than 160–300 people have been rescued and transported to hospitals, many with serious injuries.

Massive Rescue Response Amid Challenges

Relief operations involve:

  • NDRF and SDRF teams, the Indian Army, CRPF, CISF, J&K Police, and local
  • The Army deployed five columns (about 300 personnel) and medical detachments.
  • The Russian Embassy extended condolences and solidarity with victims’ families.

The geographical challenges—including landslides, washed-out roads, and continued rainfall—are severely hampering access and rescue operations.

Official Responses and Aftermath

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered condolences and assured all possible assistance to those affected.
  • CM Omar Abdullah canceled Independence Day cultural events and the “At Home” tea party, though formal ceremonies will proceed.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah is coordinating relief efforts with J&K officials.
  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated that the administration “immediately swung into action” and pledged full support.

Broader Implications

This tragedy unfolds in the context of intensifying extreme weather in the Himalayas. The IMD had warned of heavy rain, flash floods, and landslides in the region, echoing a similar crisis in Uttarakhand earlier this month, underscoring growing climate risks.

This event has dealt a devastating blow to communities and pilgrims. Our sympathies go out to the families affected. Relief efforts remain vital as rescuers continue their critical work in the treacherous terrain.
