Kajal Jatav: Tesla’s shares took a hit, dropping almost 7% before the market even opened, after Elon Musk hinted at starting a new political group called the “American Party.” This news had Wall Street investors pretty concerned.
Blending Politics with Business?
That one move alone wiped-out billions in market value and got everyone talking again about how Musk’s personal projects might be affecting Tesla’s stock. On X (formerly Twitter), Musk floated the idea that the “American Party” might become a real political force, mixing ideas from the two big parties in the US.
He didn’t give a full campaign launch or lay out a policy plan, but just his hint was enough to freak some investors out—especially since many already see Musk’s quirky public behavior as a bit of a risk for Tesla. Lately, Musk has been pretty active politically, openly backing some controversial figures and commenting on issues like free speech, immigration, and AI. While some fans love his raw honesty, many big investors think all these political stunts are just a distraction from Tesla’s main focus.
Wall Street Voices Concern Over Political Diversion
Wall Street analysts didn’t hold back. Angela Porter from Sterling Investments said, “Investors like CEOs who stick to the company’s performance and their shareholders’ interests. When someone like Musk starts talking about launching a political party, it makes people wonder if his mind is fully on Tesla.” Tesla’s stock has been swinging a lot lately, partly because of tough competition from Chinese EV brands and old-school automakers.
And Musk’s public antics often seem to directly impact Tesla’s market value, making it even messier for investors to figure out what’s really going on. Still, some experts think this drop might be just a short-term thing. Raymond Liu, a tech analyst, pointed out, “Musk’s side ventures make headlines, but Tesla’s fundamentals are still solid. That said, it’s clear the company is very much tied to Musk’s personality—whether for better or worse.”
Right now, no one has officially announced the launch of a political party, but this whole episode shows how tricky it is for Musk to balance his personal ambitions with Tesla’s reputation. The markets can react pretty fast when they think he’s crossing that line.
